Aiming to set up an avenue to present the different research studies conducted by students, the Department of Research and Development (DRD) of the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) organized the first-ever Student Research Congress at the Student and Alumni Center Amphitheater on 3 May.

Anchored on the theme, "Pioneering Progress: Unveiling Student Innovation Through Research," the research congress, which was participated in by student presenters, student research leaders, advisers, and faculty researchers from the six colleges of the University,Β  intended to showcase undergraduate research, foster cross-disciplinary connections, and facilitate presentation, analysis, and critique of findings, encouraging interaction and improvement across various fields and backgrounds.

In her message, Dr. Maria Elena T. Caguioa, TAU-Director for Research, revealed that [they] wanted to provide the students with a culture and an environment wherein they can grow to learn and love research, and organizing the event is [their] first step to creating such an environment. "TAU students have great potential to acquire new knowledge and skills. Therefore, they should be motivated to participate in the research-based economy that is necessary for the development of our country. This necessitates creating opportunities for them to be exposed to research works,” Dr. Caguioa said.

Dr. Caguioa's message was immediately followed by the presentation of the papers and the panel of evaluators, done by Dr. Edmar N. Franquera, the DRD Assistant Director.

A total of 16 papers were presented during the congress, eight of which were under the research and development category, while the other eight were under social science and education.Β  Of the 16 studies, four came from the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM); three papers each from the College of Business Administration (CBM) and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS); two papers from the College of Education (CEd), two from College of Engineering and Technology (CET), and another two from College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF).

Serving as external evaluators were Dr. Maria Teresa SJ. Valdez, former Vice PresidentΒ  for Academic Affairs (VPAA) of TAU; and Prof. Randolf Warren Gregorio T. Mayo II of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU).Β

After the evaluators’ deliberation, awards were given for the research "Sedative Effects of Passion Fruit Leaf (Passiflora edulis) extract in laboratory mice (Mus musculus)" by Christian Dave B. Calderon of CVM as Best Paper for Research and Development Category, and for "AdSuFra Spin: Manipulative as an Intervention Material Focusing on Addition and Subtraction of Dissimilar Proper Fractions" by Elyza Jane B. Aquino, Anne Genica G. Pelobueno, Regilyn H. Salcedo, and Dan Gyver P. Vinluan of CEd as Best Paper for Social Science and Education Category.

The success of the research congress has set a strong foundation for the next edition of the said event, with plans underway to expand its reach and impact.Β
