𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐒 | TAU-CED backs global citizenship education into curriculum, researches; hosts virtual seminar-symposium 

Designated as the Regional Global Citizenship Education Hub for Central Luzon, the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), through its College of Education (CED), organized a two-day virtual Seminar and Research Colloquium, 18-19 April, via Zoom online platform which was participated in by advocates from the Philippines and countries across Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Indonesia.

Dubbed as “Fostering Global Perspectives: Integrating Global Citizenship Education into Curriculum and Research Practices,” the activity aimed to introduce the global citizenship education to the participants as an integral part of the curriculum, basic tenets, research practices, and perspectives in learning.

The seminar part of the activity kicked off during the 1st day through a customary opening program led by Dr. Noel J. Petero, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Office of Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA), who, on behalf of the University President Dr. Max P. Guillermo, delivered an opening remarks. “We are thrilled to have you join us on this journey towards understanding and embracing the principles of global citizenship and global citizenship education,” Dr. Petero said.

“In today’s interconnected world, the importance of global citizenship education cannot be overstated. It’s not just merely an academic pursuit nowadays but a transformative learning approach that prepares us to navigate our complex global society with empathy, understanding, and a sense of responsibility. This seminar will allow us to explore what global citizenship means and how to integrate it into our curriculum so we can impact others,” Dr. Petero declared.   

Dr. Petero’s opening message was immediately followed by the leveling of participants’ expectations which was facilitated by Ms. Precious Jessica ZC. Calipjo, a faculty member from TAU-CEd, and the presentation of the seminar overview, which was delivered by Dr. Claire Anne A. Olivares, CEd Dean.

A lecture on “Exploring the Basic Tenets of Global Citizenship Education” by Mr. Vishaesh Juvvadi, a US Peace Corps volunteer, formally marked the start of the seminar cum research colloquium. The morning of the first day ended via an open forum about Mr. Juvvadi’s talk.

The seminar continued in the afternoon with discussions on “Reimagining Curriculum for Global Citizenship Education” by Prof. Carl Dellomos of the Philippine Normal University (PNU) and on “Global Citizenship Education: Research Perspectives and Practices” by Mr. Christian Pavik, a US Peace Corps Response Volunteer.

The research colloquium titled “Exploring Global Citizenship” commenced on Day 2 after an opening program and recapitulation of first day’s discussion, which was facilitated by Ms. Analyn J. Alegado, CEd’s GCEd focal person.

The symposium was divided into two categories: the Professional and Graduate Student Category, which was attended by teaching professionals from different state universities and colleges across the country, the Department of Education,  and alumni of the TAU-CEd Graduate Program; and the Undergraduate Students category, which was participated in by senior students from the College.

Serving as paper evaluators for the Professional and Graduate category were Prof. Carl Dellomos, Ms. Faith G. Santos, and Dr. Rene G. Nanit, with Mr. Cris Wendell Pinto, the event’s Master of Ceremony, as moderator. Meanwhile, Ms. Trisha Mae Ramos and Mr. Manuel DC. Miranda Jr. served as the paper evaluators for the Undergraduate Students category, with Ms. Rosemarie Estabillo, Mr. Ricky Lacson, Ms. Emily Aquino, and Dr. Mariella Alexes R. Espiritu acting as moderators.

In the end of all the presentations, Ms. Rufina Razalan Salcedo from DepEd won the Best Paper Presenter Award in the Professional and Graduate Student category for her presentation on "Pedagogical Skills and Competencies of Grade Six Public Elementary School Math Teachers in Relation to the Pupils' Performance in Cluster 1, Division of Tarlac Province." 

Meanwhile, the group of Bachelor of Early Childhood Education students, comprised of Danica Rose Blas, Rosalie Manabat, Christine Mendoza, Rhinah Molina, Joyce Ann Villacorta, and Kristel May Zabala secured the Best Presenter Award for the Undergraduate Student category for their study titled “Relationship of Student-Leadership Involvements and Self-Regulation of the BECED Students in Tarlac Agricultural University, S.Y. 2022-2023.”

The awarding of certificates to the participants, evaluators, speakers, and best presenters immediately followed, afterwhich Dr. Lynn Michelle Gorospe, the Assistant Dean, delivered her closing remarks, formally concluding the two-day event.
