𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐒 | CAS research nabs top spot in Psych nat’l convention
A student-led research from Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) - College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) won the first prize in the Undergraduate Thesis competition of the 37th Psychological Association of the Philippine (PAPJA) National Convention, 20 April.
Mr. Bren Noah M. Nieto and Ms. Gertrude H. Mordeno’s research entitled “When the knife is not sharp enough: Phenomenologizing the Lived Experiences of Select Male Suicide Attempt Survivors During Covid-19 Pandemic” breathed life to the stories of male survivors through “interpretative phenomenological analysis, psychological literary criticism, and integration of both.”
In Facebook post, Mr. Nieto expressed his gratitude to a number of people who have greatly contributed to the completion of the study including Dr. Benny S. Soliman, thesis adviser, and the informants whom he wished would continue to recover.
“To say that it is a reflection of our sleepless nights and worrisome days is an understatement on this note. But our immeasurable gratitude always goes to the people who were with us as we poured our hearts ‘til it reached its fruition,” Mr. Nieto added.
Meanwhile, the theses: “Perceived Experiences of Mental Health Professionals in Handling Psychologically-Distressed Individuals through Telemental Health” from Far Eastern University (FEU) Cavite and “Separating Womanhood from Motherhood: Narratives of Filipino Childfree Married Women” from Miriam College took the second and third places, respectively.
In 2022, a team from CAS clinched the silver medal with the research “Exploring the Unexplored: A Phenomenological Study on the Lived Experiences of Male Victims of Domestic Violence.”
Mr. Nieto is currently working as technical staff at Tarlac State University - Office of University Research Development while Ms. Mordeno now serves as an admitting associate at Providence Hospital in Quezon City.
