The Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), through its College of Agriculture and Forestry's Department of Food Science and Technology (CAF-DFST), yielded three new food technologists after the results of the August 2024 Food Technologists Licensure Examination (FTLE) were released 29 August.

Ms. Camelle L. Guiang, Ms. Missy T. Fernandez, and Ms. Merliza S. Delos Santos were among the 510 passers out of 995 takers or 51.26% of the examinees who took this year's FTLE, which was administered by Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in the National Capital Region, Baguio, Cebu, and Davao.

TAU exam-takers gained a passing rate of 37.50%, with first-time examinees performing at 25% (1 out of 4), and re-takers achieving a 50% pass rate (2 out of 4).

This is only the second time that the FTLE was given after its inaugural release last year. To date, the University has five faculty members who are professional food technologists after Ms. Myrla Ramos and Ms. Ma. Regina Gaspar hurdled last year’s board exam, while Ms. Susana Ramos, Ms. Christy Dianne Ramos, and Ms. Maricar Estrada took oath and were granted the PFT license in September 2023, April 2024, and July 2024, respectively, without taking the boards per section 20 of Republic Act 11052 or the Philippine Food Technology Act.

The said law states that "qualified applicants who are holders of a bachelor's degree in food technology or other allied programs and have been actively practicing the profession for at least five years are granted this privilege to apply for registration without taking the prescribed licensure examination."

In an interview, Ms. CDRamos, the DFST chair, disclosed that β€œmany of [our] alumni members are already professional food technologists without taking the exam, but we don’t know the exact number yet because we are still in the process of tracking who they are.”

When asked about their plans on how to improve the University’s performance in the board exam, she announced that [they] β€œare planning to organize and conduct review sessions soon for BSFT graduates so as to assist them in preparing for any future FTLE exams in case they decide to take the test."

The TAU community takes great pride in celebrating this milestone as it continues to solidify its reputation of producing competent graduates and remains committed to fostering a learning environment that prepares students for different industry challenges.
