Newly sworn-in Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Chair of Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) Board of Regents Dr. Desiderio R. Apag spoke before thousands of student-athletes as the guest of honor during the opening ceremony of State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association (SCUAA) III Regional Games at Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU), 24 February.

In his keynote address, Dr. Apag stressed how competition cultivates βsportsmanship, excellence, and unity.β He highlighted the significance of this yearβs theme, "Empowering Athletes, Inspiring Generations," stating, βIt reflects our commitment to challenging young athletes to push beyond their limits, transform their lives, and shape the future of sports for generations to come.β

Drawing from his personal experiences, the Commissioner further shared that he may not be a professional athlete but engaging in sports helped him build teamwork and promote social connections. βThis (sports) presents an opportunity for me to forge friendships and develop a sense of community,β he explained.

Dr. Apag also mentioned how sports contributed to his wellbeing as a leader. βAchieving success in sports, whether competitively or not, boosts my self-esteem. The sense of accomplishment from hitting a personal best, winning the game, or improving my skills can translate to greater confidence in other areas of my life,β Dr. Apag continued while adding that sports demand immediate decision-making and thus enhances his capacity to analyze situations critically and make quick decisions in dynamic, high-pressure settings.

Prior to Dr. Apagβs message, Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) President Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson joined CHED Regional Office III Regional Director Dr. Lora L. Yusi and his fellow SUC Presidents in advocating for fair and safe sports competitions. βWhatβs more important than winning is enjoying the game,β Dr. Salunson advised the spectators which included the 307 delegates from TAU.

Meanwhile, the SCUAA III Executive Board recognized Prof. Lorena T. Bermillo, former TAU Sports Development Director, and four other officials for their contributions during the SCUAA National Games which was hosted by TAU and SUCs in the region in 2023.

The annual gathering of Central Luzonβs top collegiate athletes officially commenced with the declaration from Dr. Anita G. David, PSAU President and Chair of SCUAA III Executive Board.
